Close neighbours don’t always make good friends.  But India and Sri Lanka, with deep cultural and ethnic ties forged over centuries, have navigated their political differences over the last five decades with diplomatic elan.  Both countries won Independence from colonial  rule in quick succession; Sri Lanka might have been wary of its larger neighbour in the initial years, but the Indian government under Jawaharlal Nehru was mindful of the island nation’s sensitivities.
